Testimonials about the Life Foundation

Over the years, more than 30,000 people have attended Life Foundation courses around the world, or worked with us as staff or as volunteers.

Here are comments from people who have attended our courses and conferences over the years.

I attended the Scottish conference and realized that Dru Yoga would be the way to learn more about myself not only in a physical way. I started to explore a whole new world inside and around me. Then I started the Dru Yoga teacher’s course in Holland - a great team to inspire us! I now do yoga every day and meditation as well. I get up earlier in the morning and do my yoga on the grass. It’s the best start I can give myself everyday.

The past few days have really focussed my awareness on me and the changes that need to be made in my life to enable me to move forward in the direction I wish to go. All the teachings have been very inspirational and I have taken something from every session I have attended. You are a lovely group of people, very professional and dedicated. Thank you. It has been a truly magical few days. Now I can move forward.

On a physical level, I am much more supple, particularly my neck and back. At a mental level, I’ve learned to respect that each individual has their own path to follow – and this most of all with my children. They have their own path and I no longer feel the need to try to prevent things going wrong for them but to love, listen and support. In short, I am learning to step back and perhaps most of all to realise that we can be there for each other.

Life had become a chore – in an abusive relationship – believing that all my problems stemmed from myself. I began to need some form of escape from this spiral of negative thoughts. I went to a Dru Yoga class and for the first time in my life was able to feel completely relaxed, safe and cared for. Dru Yoga simply gave me life again, the capacity to enjoy existing, to cope with grief, anger etc. It has also given me my direction in life (I had been going the opposite way) and it helps me dissolve the fear that dogs me whenever I dare to act out my dreams. And what dreams! Thank you for helping my dreams to come back to me.

I think this is the first time I have felt at peace with myself and I will try to hang on to this feeling. I will also practise just one thing that I have learned here – to tell everyone that they are very special … and also I will find a Dru Yoga class. I think I have been sent here for a purpose. All my life I have felt isolated but now do not feel so alone. Thank you C

I have had a most beautiful journey, opening my heart to the needs of others. I have learned a lovely stillness within myself and feel that I can carry the stillness and love with me forever. I feel freer than I have ever felt before and look forward to a freedom I have never experienced before. I have made new friends that will stay in my heart always. Thank you so much. (I have also learned some wonderful Dru Yoga!)

I came to love myself much more.
Since summer school, I can keep my back nice and straight when I am sitting or walking. It opens my heart and makes me feel light and shining. Dru Yoga has changed my life from the moment I started doing it and my life is still changing every day. Most of all, I have come home to myself.

The people who run the Life Course Centre are totally non-judgemental and I find this is my most important lesson.
When I was seriously ill, I used yoga to heal my body.
I like its variety – as a teacher it gives me lots of scope.
It is ‘yoga with a heart’ and is slowly prising open my heart and the hearts of the people around me.
People in my classes tell me that their lives have been transformed and I know this is also true for me. I am a very different person than I was eight years ago. Of course, I have done other things to help my personal development but yoga has been the main source of my growth.

This was my first experience of Dru Yoga. I found it a very gentle method that doesn’t hurt. I came with lower back ache, stiff joints and sore muscles. Doing Dru Yoga not only brought back my meditation skills (over 20 years ago I had practised zen meditation for 2 years), but I also feel a huge difference in my body and mind.
I am slowly losing my fear and am feeling more supple. Yesterday I had to run downstairs and nothing hurt! I felt like I was flying.
The feeling of stillness I had known in the past came back.
I feel I have opened up to life.
Thank you all, again and again.

Last night there was a man lying in the street where he had fallen. I went up to him without any fear! He turned out to be a very old man who was very drunk and couldn’t get up. I was amazed that I had the strength to lift him up on his feet and walk him back to his hotel with my mother… Thanks for the new energy.

I attended the pre-conference retreat in Scotland with Anita Goswami who touched something inside me. Since this time I have been practising Dru Yoga and meditation. The most important thing for me was the fact that I suddenly was able to feel responsible for myself. I no longer blamed my parents and other people and I am very grateful for that. Thank you very much for your help and support.

I have a clear picture now what it means to live in the present moment. I have seen the power of combining postures, breathing and meditation. I have been reminded of why we are often unhappy – that we do not know how to love ourselves, because deep in our consciousness we have the memory that we’re not good enough. I’ve learnt the tools of how to remove the cause and transform the negative emotion into powerful positive energy. I’ve learnt that when you choose to love life positively, all bits of life become beautiful, vibrant, and peaceful.

I am on a journey of self-exploration, revealing those aspects of myself which have held me back in the past and now I have the tools to recognise them, to let them go. My appreciation and connection with nature has heightened and become an essential part of my life. I step now into each day with a sense of expectancy. I find myself taking my dreams and stepping into creating them, having no fear of outcome. I have felt so appreciated and have developed a greater insight and appreciation of everyone that I meet. Thank you.

I broke through the resistance to exercise when I immediately understood the meditative stillness experienced in all the Energy Block Release work.
I have been inspired by the grace of movement found in my teachers and have been trying to copy it. I find that I can sometimes carry this grace of movement into ‘everyday’ life.
It is so excellent for changing my mood to a more joyful one.
It really helped me meditate after my practice.
I have found a lot of lovely friends and we have so much in common.
It has helped me to carry on with my spiritual journey, rekindling interest in books of spiritual content. It has been lovely to receive positive feedback when I have been fortunate enough to teach others.
It has been fun.
It has helped me meet several challenging situations.

I am new to yoga. This has been my first Life Foundation conference. I have experienced a glimpse of another world and have had the chance to just be still and ‘feel’ things without the normal daily distractions. An interesting experience with some warm people!

I wake up every morning with a deep sense of grace knowing it’s a new day and everything is going to be OK. I see behind people’s words and see the real them wondering what has happened to them today. It’s a humble gift, like seeing the old world through new eyes.

The resistance has gone
Replaced by trust
Progress is slow
I’ll persist if I must.
Led by love
I’ve glimpsed the goal
One step at a time
To touch my soul.
Thank you…

So many things I could write, but perhaps most importantly Dru Yoga has helped me to find my true self. Yes, early morning yoga while watching the sun rising over the seemingly endless forests has brought me a daily sense of peace and connection that I had little suspected to find when I first attended a Dru Yoga workshop conducted by Chris Barrington, Anita Goswami and Monica Staniforth. But that isn’t the greatest value to me – the great value lays in the chance this has given me to discover my self. I have learned a new depth of meaning for the word “gratitude”.
JH

The difference which I have experienced is the power of working with opening the heart. I have found the desire to give and serve increased many times over. I have also experienced the power which comes from giving and the truth in the saying giving is receiving. With the sense of peace, love and nurturing I want to take this out into family, community, the environment and into the world. Gratitude has become a focus and also trust in fellow human beings. Thank you.
